Three Lady Tigers in double-figures helped Verden extend their record to 7-1 Tuesday night with a 70-31 rout of Indiahoma at the Tigers’ Den.
Sophomore point guard Shay Goodson led with 14 points, senior wing Lindsey Roberts had 13 and sophomore guard Carly Skinner finished with 10 points.
The game was a mismatch and in spite of coach Davis Forsythe playing everyone and getting 12 players in the scorebook. Indiahoma just couldn’t get anything going, even against Verden’s second and third teams, and got hit with their seventh loss.
Verden came out pressing and after Jessica Mahaffey sank two free throws on Indiahoma’s first possession, the Tigers ran off 35 straight points before Mahaffey scored on the baseline halfway into the second quarter. there was a simple pattern to the game - steal, assist, layup - as the Warriors wilted quickly, even after Verden backed off and started substituting.
Goodson dumped in 10 points, two guard Dionna Glass and forwards Felicia Johnston and Roberts each had four and forward Tyanne Pettit added two to give Verden a 24-2 first-quarter lead.
They ran off another 11 in the second quarter before the almost 11-minute drought ended on Mahaffey’s baseline drive. Rosie Cheek added five points for the visitors, including a nice 12-footer with two seconds left, but six players scored for Verden to extend to 42-11 at the break.
Shelbie Ortiz hit a three off the bench near the end of the second quarter and drained another early in the third. Skinner and Roberts scored four more each and Goodson and Taylor Harris added buckets as the defense held Indiahoma to six points, four from freshman Jacinda Lovelace.
With the Verden starters watching from the bench, Indiahoma stayed with the reserves and actually won the quarter 14-13 on two threes each from Mahaffey and Lauren Lafferty. Skinner and Missy Pena each scored twice, Harris hit a free throw and Rikki Davidson and Tamara Smith each scored once.
Dionna Glass finished with eight points, Ortiz had six, Johnston and Pena each had four, Harris added three and Keyla Glass, Pettit, Davidson and Smith each had two.
Lafferty and Mahaffey each finished 10 ten points for Indiahoma, Cheek had seven and Lovelace added four.
Friday night, Verden will have a little tougher matchup, hosting seventh-ranked and neighboring Am-Po.
