DOVER – Verden's Lady Tigers took the Army's old motto to heart Thursday with just a little twist. They did more before noon than most basketball teams did all day.
Verden took control early – very early – and belted the Okeene Jayvee, 40-14, Thursday in the 10:30 a.m. first round game of the Dover Tournament.
The victory lifted Verden to 8-1.
The Lady Tigers will play the winner of the Geary vs. Crooked Oak at 3:20 p.m. today in the second round. Geary and Crooked Oak faced off late Thursday.
"It's nice to be 8-1, especially having played this early in the morning," Verden head coach Ryan Perry said. "You never know how kids will respond in these early games."
Rikkie Davidson scored 10 points to lead the way for Verden. Kaitlyn Embrey and Taylor McComas each added nine points.
The Lady Tigers jumped to a 13-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and built a 19-point halftime advantage.
