Chickasha and Yukon have met in the championship games of Altus’ Lady Bulldog Classic for the past two years and both times the Lady Chicks have come home with the gold.

This year’s edition tips off next Thursday, and in spite of hogging the title games, both teams have still been invited back. Chances are pretty good that they could meet again in this year’s championship. If so, it could be an interesting matchup.

Defending Chickasha’s titles will be the reserves and role-players from those two championship teams. This year it’s their turn to be the starters and difference-makers and go for the three-peat.

They have talent and speed but not much size and “big game” varsity experience. They’ll be out-sized in the lanes for the most part but are strong, aggressive and physical. The Chicks’ strength is in the backcourt, where they are deep and quick, and in their smothering defense. If they shoot the ball well, they will be deadly.

The Millerettes have a little (4-11) freshman guard, Meagan Henson, who averaged over twenty points per in junior high and was a key player on the AAU 14-and-under national championship team last summer. With her at the point and with four senior veterans back, they like their chances of ending the Lady Chicks’ reign this year.

But first they have to get there.

The teams find themselves the top two seeds and on opposite ends of the brackets again but they’ll have to take care of some business first to get to the anticipated Saturday showdown.

The Chicks face Iowa Park (TX) in their 3:30 opener Thursday and are in the bracket with host Altus and Childress (TX). Yukon has a tougher draw, with Wichita Falls (TX), eighteenth-ranked Enid (6A) and third-ranked Southeast (4A) in their bracket.

Coach Tim Gray will get to see how his team plays under some pressure for three straight days. This tournament will be a good test for his unproven, but potentially pretty good Lady Chicks. No matter the outcome, it will be a very important weekend for them.
