Chickasha's Cayss Lowery drops back for the Chicks during their scrimmage with Blanchard at Blanchard in August.

For several area football teams, the 2019 season begins this week.

A majority of the teams in the area are scheduled to begin their seasons this week after a few started last week. Varsity teams in the area combined to go 4-0 last week.

Chickasha at Marlow

The Chickasha Fightin’ Chicks are looking to start the season 1-0 for the second season in a row when they play the Marlow Outlaws on Friday. Chickasha defeated Marlow last season 35-24 in a renewal of the rivalry between the two schools.

Chickasha’s win over Marlow snapped the football program’s losing streak that went back to 2016. The Chicks eventually finished the season with a record of 4-6.

Marlow finished the season with a record of 5-6 and fell to Heritage Hall in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

Chickasha is looking to advance to the playoffs for the first time since 2013.

Alex at Laverne

The Alex Longhorns will open the season Friday with a long road trip to the northwest part of the state to face the Laverne Tigers in a rematch from last season.

Alex defeated Laverne 60-30 and eventually finished the 2018 season with an 8-4 record. After a 60-30 loss to Alex, Laverne went 9-2 the rest of the way to finish the season with a record of 10-3.

Tuttle at Kingfisher

Friday's matchup between Tuttle and Kingfisher is a matchup between powers in Classes 3A and 4A.

Tuttle — the defending Class 4A state champion — opened the season in dominant fashion against the Newcastle Racers during Week Zero. Tuttle defeated Newcastle 41-7 to get to 1-0 on the season.

The game against Tuttle is Kingfisher’s season opener. The two teams have split the last two meetings.

Tuttle won last season’s matchup 26-14.

The two teams combined for 23 wins last season. While Tuttle won the state championship, Kingfisher advanced to the Class 3A semifinals.

Other games

Blanchard, Bridge Creek and Cyril are also scheduled to play their season openers Friday.

Blanchard will be at Elgin. Bridge Creek will host Little Axe, and Cyril will host Corn Bible Academy.

Playing their second games Friday, Minco and Dibble will face off in Minco. Minco defeated Wynnewood last week, and Dibble defeated the Chickasha JV.

Rush Springs’ off week is this week. The Redskins opened the season last week with a win over Konawa.
