The Chick freshman and JV teams both got beaten at home by El Reno Monday night, with the freshmen losing 32-16 and the JV getting hammered 41-0.
The freshmen were only down by three points, 19-16, late in the third quarter but things fell apart and the Tribe scored twice in the fourth quarter for the win.
The JV never got in their game, losing big.
CHS head coach Rick VanCleave explained:
“We had four freshman starters out due to eligibility and with just ten kids on the JV roster, we had to play some of the freshmen up to fill it out.
“We don’t have a ‘backup’ varsity quarterback to run the JV team. Senior running back Jonathan Skinner had been doing it since he had some quarterbacking experience but with all the injury problems on the varsity we couldn’t risk having him get hurt in a JV game.”
Freshman backup Bubba Wright took snaps in the JV game but was overwhelmed.
“Bubba made a good effort but there’s a world of difference in quarterbacking a freshman offense compared to a varsity or JV offense,” the coach said. “They’re two different things.
“We probably shouldn’t have even played this game but these kids work hard all week and we wanted to give them an opportunity to get out there and play. They’ve earned the field time and it gives them game experience to build on for next year.
“We went out there and did the best we could with what we had available.”
