The eighth grade Chicks' good team defense helped them take home a good 12-8 road win from Western Heights last night.

They got an early wake-up call when Windal Jones (28) returned the opening kickoff 80 yards to put the home team up 8-0 but put it behind them and took care of business. The Chick defense shut things down the rest of the way and the offense put together two scoring drives against a tough Western Heights defense for the win.

Drake Morris came within one guy of tying things up on the Chicks' first possession. Running up the gut, he had one man to beat for six but the last Jet defender slowed him down just enough to allow two of his buddies to grab on and be dragged along for the ride. Morris was dragged down at the home 40 but the drive stalled and the Jets took over on downs.

Chickasha got the ball right back, though, as the defense popped the ball loose on the Jets' first play and Jacob Farley covered it. Tailback Sidney Henderson ripped off 20 yards to get to the Jet 23 then Jared Jobe went up top to Josh Jefferies for six. The pass for the deuce failed but the Chicks were right back in it going into the second quarter.

The defense got the ball back on downs at the Chick 39 and the offense went back to work. A 15-yard pass to Farley, a 21-yard burst by Morris and another 10-yarder by Henderson got them inside the red zone. A pass to Morris in the flat got them to the one then Jobe snuck it in for the lead with 90 seconds left.

Western Heights got the ball in good shape after covering Chickasha's onside kick and tried to rally but ran out of clock at the Chick 14.

The defenses dug in for the second half. Western Heights got a break late in the third when a Chickasha fumble gave them great field position at the Chick 25. Chickasha's defense held and got the ball back right at the same spot.

The Jets then pinned them in but Jobe and Morris bailed their team out with the play of the game. Still stuck on their 25 but now facing third and ten, Jobe rolled left and threw a strike 20 yards upfield to Morris, who pulled it down at the 45 for a first down and possession.

Chickasha was able to run the clock down to just over a minute before Western Heights forced them to punt but they found themselves buried when they took over. A desperation lateral went to the ground, Chickasha covered it with 40 seconds left and took a knee for the win.

Next up for the eighth grade team will be a Monday night road trip to Cameron Stadium to play Lawton Tomlinson.

The kickoff will be at 4 p.m.
