Led by a sophomore and freshman, the Chickasha Fightin’ Chicks put together a team effort and added a tally to the win column.
Sophomore Xavier Copeland-McFadden and freshman Ma’lek Murphy led the way in Chickasha’s win over Blanchard in Chickasha on Tuesday. The duo combined to score 33 points in the team’s 46-44 win over the Lions for Chickasha’s third victory of the season.
The two teams traded leads in the first quarter. After a Blanchard 3-pointer gave the Lions a 9-7 lead, Copeland-McFadden responded with a 3-pointer of his own. Blanchard’s Caden Frazier then buried a 3-pointer to give the Lions back the lead.
Blanchard held a 12-10 lead after the first quarter, and Copeland-McFadden had eight of Chickasha's 10 first-quarter points.
The Lions started to get separation in the second quarter, building a 19-12 lead over the Fightin’ Chicks with a 7-0 scoring run. Trailing by seven, Chickasha scored the half’s final five points to make the score 21-19 at halftime.
Hasian Burdex buried a 3-pointer early in the second half to give Chickasha a 22-21 lead, and the team never trailed again. Burdex hit a second triple in the third quarter to put Chickasha up 25-21 over Blanchard.
Chickasha built a 31-25 lead in the third quarter before Blanchard scored the next five points to get within one. Chickasha led 35-30 heading to the fourth quarter after baskets from Murphy and Deonte Wash.
A Copeland-McFadden basket pushed Chickasha’s lead to seven points in the fourth quarter, but Blanchard was not out of the game. Two triples brought the Lions back to within just one point of the Fightin’ Chicks, making the score 37-36.
Blanchard eventually tied the game at 42 points apiece. Chickasha responded with the game’s next four points, three of which came from Murphy at the free-throw line. Wash also hit a free throw during the 4-0 run.
Copeland-McFadden ended the game with 19 points for Chickasha, and Murphy scored 14 points in the win. Burdex, Wash and Steven Mays rounded out the scoring for Chickasha. Mays was also a force on the defensive end for the Fightin’ Chicks.
Frazier led the Lions with 14 points, and two other Blanchard players scored in double figures.
Chickasha will play the Anadarko Warriors in Anadarko on Friday. Blanchard has a home game against the Cache Bulldogs scheduled for Friday.
