MINCO — The Minco Bulldogs continue to look the part of a highly-ranked team in Class 2A.
Minco entered Friday’s game in Minco against the Alex Longhorns ranked fifth in Class 2A. Four Bulldog players finished the game with 13 points or more in an 83-39 victory. Minco moved to 10-2 on the season with the win, and Alex fell to 4-3 with the loss.
The Longhorns led 5-4 in the first quarter after a 3-pointer, but the Bulldogs were able to go on a scoring run and never trailed after taking back the lead.
With Minco trailing 5-4, Nick Burchfield started an 8-0 scoring run with a 3-point shot. Cooper Shirley hit one of his two triples to complete Minco’s streak of unanswered points, giving the Bulldogs a 12-5 advantage.
Minco ended up scoring 25 points in the first quarter and went to the second quarter with a 15-point lead. After scoring the final three points of the first quarter, the Bulldogs opened the second quarter with 14 points in a row to take a 39-10 advantage.
Tatton Anderson scored for Alex to end Minco’s run of unanswered points. Anderson led the Longhorns with 12 points in the loss.
Minco ended up going to halftime with a 45-20 advantage. The Bulldogs continued to build on their lead in the second half.
Shirley led all scorers in the game with 26 points. Dane Brummell (14), Max Morrison (13) and Burchfield (13) also totaled at least 13 points in the team’s victory.
Alex will play at Bray-Doyle on Tuesday. Minco will play again Jan. 14 at Crossings Christian.
Graham scores for Alex
Near the end of the game, there was one big moment for the Alex Longhorn basketball team. Jesse Graham was able to come off the bench and was given the opportunity to score for the Longhorns.
To applause from both sides, Graham was able to put the ball in the basket.
