A battle of two area teams took place in Chickasha on Tuesday.
The Chickasha Lady Chicks and Blanchard Lady Lions faced each other, and the Lady Chicks held a double-digit lead in the first half before falling by four points. In the end, the Lady Lions walked away with a 44-40 victory.
The Lady Chicks put together a strong start and built a double-digit lead in the first quarter. Brittney Grissam's 3-pointer gave the Lady Chicks a 5-0 lead after Chloee Steelman got the Lady Chicks on the board.
Carly Craig scored Blanchard’s only two points of the quarter to cut the deficit to three points. Chickasha then finished the quarter on a 10-0 run and led 15-2 after the first quarter. Steelman, Grissam, Lexi Albright and Gracie Weber combined for those 10 points.
Led by Callie Hacker’s eight second-quarter points, Blanchard tried to work its way back in the game before halftime and cut its deficit to single digits. Hacker scored the quarter's first four points to get the Lady Lions within nine points.
But Hacker’s solo 4-0 run was answered by a solo 5-0 run from Chickasha’s DeMyra Foster to give the Lady Chicks a 20-6 advantage. Chickasha led Blanchard 24-10 in the second quarter, but the Lady Lions finished the half on a small scoring run.
Blanchard’s first make from beyond the arc after several attempts cut its deficit to 11, and one final basket made the score 24-15 in favor of Chickasha. The Lady Chicks went to the second half with that 24-15 lead.
That small 5-0 run from Blanchard to end the first half eventually ballooned to a 22-0 run in the third quarter before Foster scored Chickasha’s only two points of the period. Hacker scored Blanchard’s first 10 points of the third quarter and gave the Lady Lions a 25-24 lead over their opponent.
Blanchard's final seven points of the quarter belonged to Craig. Craig gave the Lady Lions a 32-24 lead before Chickasha made the score 32-26 heading to the final quarter.
Chickasha did not go away in the fourth quarter and trailed by three points a couple of times. Steelman’s 3-pointer made the score 36-33 in favor of Blanchard, and a pair of free throws from Albright got Chickasha within three at 43-40.
Chickasha gave the Lady Lions plenty of trouble on defense after making the score 43-40, but Blanchard was able to survive.
Albright ended up leading Chickasha with 10 points. Grissam and Foster each had nine points for Chickasha, and Steelman had seven points in the loss. Leighanne Eaton and Weber combined for the other five Chickasha points.
Hacker led all scorers with 22 points for Blanchard, and Craig ended the game with 14 points. Gracie Steelman and Lauren Coffman combined for the other eight points.
Chickasha will be at Anadarko on Friday, and Blanchard will host Cache the same evening.
