Opening their seasons on the road, the Minco Lady Bulldogs and Minco Bulldogs opened the 2019-2020 basketball seasons with a sweep of the Central High Lady Bronchos and Bronchos on Tuesday evening.
The Lady Bulldogs opened up the year with a 30-24 victory after taking the lead for good in the third quarter, and the Bulldogs went wire-to-wire in the 90-41 victory to open the year 1-0 for both teams.
For the girls, Minco's Dallas Brothers opened up the game with two baskets, and Emily Martinez hit a free throw to take the 7-5 lead with an eventful second quarter that saw several lead changes and ties.
Emma White went a perfect 2-for-2 in the second quarter, while Ashley Rickey and Malya Vazquez hit two free throws, and the game was tied 15-15 heading into the second half.
Minco was able to grab its biggest lead of the game in the third quarter when Natalie Carballo hit a basket to build the lead to eight. The team got two baskets from Lanie Hughes and Martinez for the Lady Bulldogs to take the 24-19 lead after three quarters of play.
The game was able to be iced by free throws as Hughes went 2-for-3 at the charity stripe. Minco also got baskets from Martinez and Rickey to preserve the victory and go to 1-0 on the year.
Martinez had seven points and Hughes had six to lead the way for the Lady Bulldogs. The rest of the points were spread out between five other players.
In the second game, the Bulldogs started the game with a 6-0 run and only missed five baskets the entire first quarter. Cooper Shirley did the most damage against the Bronchos.
Shirley got five baskets, including a big long-range shot as the Bulldogs shot 70% from the field and 60% from beyond the arc to lead 24-10 after the first quarter of play.
The bench helped carry the Bulldogs in the second quarter to a bigger lead, as they went 5-for-5 from the field with four baskets coming from Austin Brothers.
Dane Brummell also helped the Bulldogs in the second quarter by hitting three shots, including going a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs led 56-20 at the end of the first half.
Shirley was able to chip in 10 more points in the third quarter, going a perfect 4-for-4 in shooting. The lead was almost 50 points at 76-29 after three quarters of play.
With the starters out, the bench came into play and didn’t slow down as Chase Gore hit three baskets and got all eight of his points of the night in the fourth quarter of action.
Ethan Ventris was able to help make sure the Bulldogs went home with the comfortable 49-point victory over Central High.
Minco will now be off the rest of the Thanksgiving break as the teams continue their road stretch against Cordell for their next set of games.
The Lady Bulldogs will tip off at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cordell, and the Bulldogs will tip off after the conclusion of the girls game at approximately 8 p.m.
