ALEX — The annual Longhorn Classic in Alex started up on Thursday.
The Alex Lady Longhorns opened their home tournament with a 54-38 win over Wayne and advanced to face Stratford in the tournament semifinals. The Alex boys defeated Chattanooga 38-32 Thursday and advanced to play Calumet in their semifinal game.
The Lady Longhorns never trailed in their 16-point win over the Lady Bulldogs. After Lauren Garcia’s free throw gave the Lady Longhorns a 5-4 advantage in the first quarter, the teams were never even tied for the rest of the game.
Alex went to the second quarter with an 8-4 advantage over Wayne.
Despite trailing, the Lady Bulldogs continued to hang around in the second quarter. But Alex did finish the half on a 6-0 scoring run to take a 24-12 lead to the second half of the game.
Maddy Morris led the charge for Alex’s offense in the second half, scoring 13 of her 19 points during the last two quarters of the game. She went on a solo 6-0 run in the third quarter to give the Lady Longhorns a 30-15 lead.
But Wayne still would not go away and only trailed by 10 at one point in the fourth quarter. With Alex leading 35-25, Kye Heldermon stepped up and buried a triple to push her team’s lead to 13 points.
The Alex boys never trailed in their win over Chattanooga on Thursday and jumped out to a 9-0 lead over their opponent. Five of those nine points came from Chase Byrne.
Alex led 12-2 after the first quarter.
Jon Fitzsimmons carried the load on offense in the second quarter. He went on a solo 5-0 run and gave the Longhorns a 17-2 advantage in the game.
Alex led 19-6 at halftime.
Byrne once again took charge of the offense in the second half, recording 12 of his 17 points during the final two quarters.
After going to the final quarter with a 27-13 deficit, the Warriors looked to claw their way back in the final quarter. Despite the comeback attempt, Alex picked up the win.
Both Ninnekah teams won their first-round games at the Longhorn Classic, sweeping Union City in those games. The two Ninnekah teams completed their second sweep of Union City this season by winning both games Thursday.
The Lady Owls advanced to play Calumet on Friday. The Owls advanced to play Stratford.
