Both Alex teams lost in district finals over the weekend, but reaching the final assured them of a place at regionals.

Hosts Hydro-Eakly boys and girls won the District 5 championship against Alex teams on Saturday. The Longhorns were defeated, 57-32, while the Alex girls fell, 60-39.

Alex reached the final with wins in the play-in round of district. The Lady Longhorns squeaked by in a 35-34 win against Flether, while the boys stormed to a 47-27 victory.

Those wins meant both teams automatically qualify for regionals at Hydro-Eakly starting Thursday. The girls play Sterling at 1:30 p.m., and the boys will play Maysville immediately afterward.

Alex teams must win their next three games to reach the area round, which will be held in Cache starting Feb. 25.
