VERDEN — Verden High School’s baseball tournament proved to be a successful one for a couple of area teams.

The Verden Tigers and Ninnekah Owls both finished in the top three at the tournament. The tournament lasted Thursday through Saturday of last week, and the two teams ended up winning two games apiece in the process.

Finishing the tournament Saturday, Verden ended up taking second place at the tournament. Ninnekah ended up finishing third at the tournament.

The Tigers finished second after an 11-1 loss to Santa Fe South High School in the championship game.

Verden’s road to the championship game started Thursday with the Cement Bulldogs. The Tigers advanced to the semifinals with a 5-3 victory.

The Tigers followed that game up with a shutout victory in the semifinals the following day. They took down Agra 4-0.

Verden’s only run of the game against Santa Fe South came in the top half of the third inning. Cyler Elrod reached base to lead off the inning and eventually crossed home plate as the team’s only run.

The Tigers threatened to score more runs in the fourth inning with the game still in reach. Trailing 6-1, the Tigers loaded the bases with just one out but could not add any runs to the scoreboard.

As for the Owls, they won their tournament opener Thursday against Riverside Indian School. With Ninnekah trailing Riverside, Bryce Sullivan tied the game.

Kyle Worbes gave Ninnekah the lead for good in an 8-4 victory.

The Owls fell to Santa Fe South the following day and picked up a win over Agra on Saturday to clinch third place at the tournament.
