The Alex Lady Longhorns have been busy preparing for the 2019 season.
Alex recently competed in preseason play at the Chickasha Sports Complex, and head coach Justin Williams is ready to get the actual season started.
“It’s going to be exciting,” he said. “We’ll be competitive. We’ll be scrappy.”
The Lady Longhorns only had one senior on last season’s squad that won more than 15 games. That senior was Kiley Baxter.
Baxter provided a lot for the Lady Longhorns, but Williams believes her leadership ability was one of the most important aspects she brought to the team.
“The one thing we’ll really miss is the leadership aspect,” he said. “She was our vocal leader (and) emotional leader. A lot of the girls looked up to her.”
Williams believes that players stepping up as leaders will be an important factor for the Lady Longhorns going forward.
“That's going to be our biggest key,” he said.
One thing Williams knows about the team is that the work ethic to be successful is already there.
“We work hard,” he said. “That’s kind of who we have to be.”
The Lady Longhorns ended their 2018 season in the district portion of the postseason. Alex had to face eventual state champion Amber-Pocasset in district play last season.
Williams said that some of the main things he has talked about with his squad are giving plenty of effort and having the right attitude. He will be able to live with what happens if the team does those things.
“If those two things are good, I can live with the results,” Williams said.
