ALEX — With a regional spot already locked up, the Alex Lady Longhorns had their eyes on another prize.

After earning a first-round bye in the district tournament, the Lady Longhorns battled the Waurika Lady Eagles for the district title in Alex on Saturday. The Lady Longhorns ended up with a 41-35 victory.

Alex lost the first quarter 11-7, but its long-range shooting provided a spark in the second quarter. The Lady Longhorns hit three shots from beyond the arc during an 11-0 run that put them up by seven.

The first of the three long-range shots during Alex’s run came from Kye Heldermon. Callyn Carnes followed Heldermon’s basket with one inside the arc, giving the Lady Longhorns a 12-11 advantage.

Alex never trailed again after taking the lead in the second quarter.

Six of Maddy Morris’ 11 points came during the 11-0 run. She hit two triples to give the Lady Longhorns an 18-11 lead. Carnes was able to beat the buzzer to give Alex a 20-15 lead at halftime.

Alex’s Kaitlyn Goleman helped carry the load on offense in the third quarter, scoring six of the team’s 11 points in the period. She scored Alex’s first six points of the second half and six of her eight points in the period.

The Lady Longhorns held the Lady Eagles to their second single-digit quarter in a row in the third quarter and were able to extend their lead. Alex outscored Waurika 11-9 in the period and went to the fourth quarter with a 31-24 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Alex was able to push its lead up to 13 points after an Albany Harris basket made the score 39-26. After six points through the first three quarters of play, Carnes matched that point total with six of her 12 points in the game’s final quarter.

Waurika was able to get within six, but time ran out on the Lady Eagles.

By winning the district title, the Lady Longhorns managed to avoid an elimination game for at least the first game of the regional tournament. The Lady Longhorns will play Class A No. 2 Canute at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Alex.

Other district results

The Cyril Lady Pirates won a district title by beating Central High 40-32 at home in the Class A playoffs Saturday. The Lady Pirates had a first-round bye in district play.

Cyril will play Binger-Oney at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Central High for its first game of the regional tournament. Every regional game after Thursday will be played at Alex.

The Verden Lady Tigers suffered a 58-33 loss to Ringling in an elimination game at Canute on Friday in Class A.

In Class B, the Cement Lady Bulldogs defeated Gracemont 49-47 Friday in an elimination game at Lookeba-Sickles and suffered a 76-29 loss to Lookeba-Sickles in Saturday’s district title game. Cement will play Corn Bible Academy on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. and will be at Granite for the first day of the regional tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs move to Chattanooga if they win Thursday.
