MINCO — The Alex Lady Longhorns are still undefeated.

Despite losing a double-digit lead in the second half of Friday’s game in Minco against the Minco Lady Bulldogs, the Lady Longhorns picked up a 50-46 win to move to 7-0 on the season. Minco fell to 5-4 on the season with the loss.

The Lady Longhorns held a 30-20 lead at halftime but trailed 44-42 late in the game. Alex then took the lead for good on a Riley Byrne 3-pointer and scored eight points in a row to go up by six. 

The Lady Longhorns were clutch from the free-throw line, making 7 of 8 in the fourth quarter.

Alex never trailed until Minco took a 35-34 lead in the fourth quarter. The Lady Longhorns jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the game before the Lady Bulldogs were able to get on the scoreboard.

Alex’s Callyn Carnes scored four of the team’s first eight points and scored eight of her 13 points in the first quarter.

A couple of 3-pointers helped keep Minco close in the first quarter. Despite the quick start, Alex only held a 17-12 lead heading to the second.

Minco only trailed by five in the second quarter when Alex went on a 6-0 run to go up by 11 and eventually went to halftime with that 10-point lead over its opponent.

But things began to turn in the third quarter, and the Lady Bulldogs began to work their way back. Minco scored the first five points of the second half and outscored Alex 14-4 in the third quarter to go to the fourth in a 34-34 tie.

Maddy Morris scored all four points for Alex in the third quarter and had 16 points in the victory. She came up big from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, going 4 of 4 in the period and 6 of 7 in the game.

Minco had momentum heading to the fourth quarter after Malya Vazquez buried a 3-pointer to tie the game at 34 points apiece.

The two teams traded leads in the fourth quarter. Natalie Carballo buried a 3-pointer to give the Lady Bulldogs a 40-38 advantage, but the Lady Longhorns were able to survive.

The Lady Longhorns will play again Tuesday at Bray-Doyle. The Lady Bulldogs will play Thursday on the opening day of Boone-Apache’s tournament.
