ALEX — The Alex Longhorns were looking to secure third place at their tournament Saturday.

The Longhorns ended up with a third-place finish after a 41-33 win over the Stratford Bulldogs in Alex and finished the tournament 2-1. The Longhorns started the tournament with a 38-32 win over Chattanooga on Thursday and then fell to Calumet in the semifinals to set up a third-place game against the Stratford Bulldogs.

The Longhorns never gave up their lead after Jon Fitzsimmons scored while being fouled and hit the ensuing free throw to give them a 6-3 advantage. Fitzsimmons came up big throughout the game, finishing with 16 points for the Longhorns.

Alex went to the second quarter with a 9-4 advantage and carried a 20-14 lead to the second half.

The duo of Fitzsimmons and Chase Byrne led the charge on offense in the second half for the Longhorns, combining to score 19 of the team’s 21 second-half points. Fitzsimmons scored all eight points for Alex in the third quarter, including six off of 3-pointers.

Fitzsimmons hit two triples in the third quarter, and his second 3-pointer of the game gave the Longhorns a 28-15 lead over the Bulldogs.

After just two points through the first three quarters of the game, Byrne scored seven in the fourth quarter to help the Longhorns keep their distance from the Bulldogs. Fitzsimmons added four more points in the fourth quarter.

Tatton Anderson scored the only two points of the second half that were not scored by Fitzsimmons or Byrne.
