Where has the summer gone? Chickasha schools open their doors to students on Wednesday. For my daughter, the student, it seems like the final day of school in May was just yesterday.

I was kidding her last Thursday when she attended the Rotary Club meeting with me that it was the first time all summer she had gotten up before noon.

She had better change her sleep patterns quickly, because come this Thursday, her first class meets at 7:45. That's a.m., darling.

We all need to get used to school starting again. Take note today of school zones and get ready to slow down because speed limits in those zones will be enforced starting this week.

Be aware of any school bus stops along your regular routes and be reminded that when a school bus driver stops and puts out a stop sign and turns on the flashing red lights, traffic in both directions must come to a halt.

Failure to adhere to school zone speed limits and stopped school busses will result in hefty fines. And, rightfully so.

We must all be diligent in looking out for our kids and ensuring their safety.

School starts much earlier these days -- that's on the calendar and the clock.

Back in the dark ages, when I was a student, the first day of school was always the first Tuesday after Labor Day and the last day of school was the Thursday or Friday before Memorial Day. My first semester of college in 1970 didn't start until Sept. 28.

School in my hometown didn't start until 8:30 a.m. and turned out at 3:30 p.m. I wonder how I would handle the 7:45 a.m. start.

I know for a fact that my younger sister would never have been on time had we had to start that early.

School might not start until Wednesday but the community can get its first look at the new High School activity center Monday night. From most reports, despite its detractors who can't seem to get past its financing, the center is first rate and is a great addition to the high school complex.

I can't wait to see it. See you there.
