Summer may seem far away, but the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE)  is already making plans to help underprivileged students who often go hungry during the summer break.

Chickasha students are among those who benefit from having free meals served at school. All Chickasha Public School students are served free breakfast and lunch. Moreover, many local organizations have stepped in during the summer months to help with the Summer Food Service, a U.S. Department of Agriculture program.

OSDE is asking eligible sponsors all across the state to consider easing hunger pains for thousands of children in Summer 2020.

OSDE announced on Monday that they are seeking new and returning sponsors. Eligible sponsors include public or governmental agencies, private, nonprofit residential summer camps and private, nonprofit organizations.

During the summer meal program, sponsors provide a site and staff, meeting specific requirements.

Sponsors receive financial assistance to assist with the cost of obtaining, preparing and serving the food. This includes administrative costs, according to OSDE.
