Lady Chicks fall in Invitational opener

Battling both Duncan and the elements, Chickasha girls were handed their first loss of the season on Thursday in the opener of the Chickasha Invitational.

The Lady Demons’ 2-1 win was the result of opportunities taken with the wind at their backs and some stout defending under mounting Lady Chick pressure as the second half progressed. Chickasha (3-1) will feel hard done by with the amount of second half chances they had.

Chickasha now plays at 8 a.m. Saturday in the consolation semifinals.

Duncan owed a lot to sophomore Lindsey Trostle, who started in goal for the first time this season after starter Elle Welborn was sidelined by a knee injury she suffered while skiing over the spring break. The youngster performed admirably, making some crucial second half saves to deny the Lady Chicks an equalizer.

Duncan’s goals came in the first half, partly from wind, partly from loose marking in the box. Just ten minutes in Chickasha struggled to clear a goal kick with the gusts right in their faces. It fell straight to Autumn Parker, who took one touch before unleashing a looping shot that sailed right over goalkeeper Madison Snyder’s head and into the left side of the net.

Now with momentum also behind them, the Lady Demos took little time to double their advantage. Just two minutes later, Betty Geary sent a corner kick swinging in from the left where Stephanie Wainscott applied the first time finish.

The Lady Chicks did manage to trek forward, and caused a stir a few times. Sophomore Lindsey Trostle, starting in the Duncan goal after junior Elle Welborn picked up an injury on spring break, faced a test with Amanda Black’s ball through the center. Katie Hinch looked to take it around Trostle, but the sophomore got a leg to it. The rebound fell to Shorty Clift, on her Lady Chicks soccer debut, who was unable to finish in an empty net under defensive pressure.
