Baseball, softball camps held at end of month

High school baseball has wound down, but the summer schedule for Chickasha is just starting with their annual baseball camp right around the corner.

The camp, held May 27-29 from 9 a.m. to Noon, is run by Fightin' Chicks coaching staff, including head coach Brad Gore, and varsity players.

"We do a little bit of everything," Gore said. "Just the fundamentals, things that kids will benefit from understanding early on."

Kids ages seven through 12 can sign up for $45 each for the three-day camp. Players, along with coaches, will provide instruction, which Gore says is helpful to both the youngsters and the high schoolers.

"The whole team comes out and does a little instructing," Gore said. "Even in our high school practices, we like for the kids to coach. If you can repeat the words you hear in practice, it only enhances your ability to really grasp that concept."

Each day starts with learning the basics in drills before teams are divided up for inter-squad scrimmages. Campers will get the chance to compete for prizes while showing what they've learned so far.

"We think they enjoy it, and I know I do," Gore said.

A day later than the baseball cam, head coach Dennis Furr will oversee the softball camp. Between May 28-30, players ages seven through 13 can experience the training and team building it takes to grow into a varsity Chickasha player. The camp also runs from 9 a.m. to Noon and costs $50.

Softball registration can be done by calling coach Furr at (580) 704-1215. For baseball, register through coach Gore by calling the high school at (405) 222-6550.
