Diaper Derby, Turtle Race featured at May Daze Festival in Blanchard

— Turtles and babies have a lot in common.

Besides being low to the ground and having a tendency to crawl on their bellies, both have the opportunity to be champions on May 17 at the 21st Annual May Daze Festival in Blanchard.

The 5th Annual Diaper Derby will take place at 1 p.m. A local gymnastics studio, Wild Side Tumbling, brings a mat for the babies to crawl across, Laura Callaham, Blanchard Chamber of Commerce Director, said.

A relative is permitted to stay close to the baby while another person entices the baby at the finish line with a variety of  baby bait: cell phone, jingly keys or food.

"There could be three babies or ten babies, you never know," Callaham said. The nature of the race can also vary, from neck-to-neck to adorably chaotic while competitive race music plays in the background.

Babies must be of crawling age.

Any age turtle, any kind of turtle can participate in the 5th Annual Turtle Race at 4 p.m. The turtle jockey, or the person racing the turtle, can also be of any age, though it's usually kids, Callaham said.

Participants must register their baby or turtle by the time of the race at the Blanchard Chamber booth located at the center of the festival near the stage area.

The champion, whether in a shell or diaper, will receive a trophy as well as localized fame on the Blanchard Facebook and in the newspaper.

In addition to racing, there are many activities throughout the May Daze Festival for fairgoers to enjoy. Music fans will enjoy "Name That Show Tune," married couples can get reacquainted during the "Not So Newlywed" game. There will also be a hula hoop and limbo contest and more.

The two-day, May Daze Festival takes place Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17. The free, family-friendly event is held in downtown Blanchard on Main Street.

Booth vendors will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on both days. In addition to a wide variety of shopping experiences, fairgoers can enjoy several different kinds of fair foods including foot-long corndogs, smoked turkey legs, roasted corn, ice cream, pastries, soda and more.

The carnival opens at 10 a.m. Wristbands are available for purchase at Spencer's  Supermarket in Blanchard and through the Blanchard Chamber at 405.485.8787. Wristbands are $15 in advance and $20 at the carnival and are only valid 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, May 16 and 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday May 17.

Live entertainment of all varieties will be on stage all weekend, including Wild Side Tumbling, Red Dirt Road Band, Walking Relic and many more. The Crossfire Band will take the stage on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and the Shiloh Station Band will perform on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. Also, Jake FM will be doing a live remote from the festival on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to noon.
