Four Chickasha residents were arrested for smoking marijuana in the presence of a 2-year-old child yesterday.
Chickasha Police Officer David Harper-Head said he went to a residence that was divided into apartments to serve an arrest warrant, but was unable to find the person he was looking for in a downstairs apartment.
Harper-Head said he smelled marijuana emanating from the door of an upstairs apartment and knocked on the door, which was answered by Darrell Owings.
"Owings looked at me and Officer Gillian Rainey, and then immediately slammed the door shut," he said. "I heard [Owings] state out loud, 'it's the police.'
Harper-Head said Mark Jones, a participant in the Grady County Drug Court program, lived in the apartment and stepped outside the apartment to speak with he and Rainey.
He said because of a previous guilty plea for a drug charge, he and his apartment are subject to search.
"I asked [Jones] why I could smell marijuana. [He] told me that he had some people inside who were smoking marijuana," Harper-Head said.
He said he went into the apartment to speak with Owings, Sharie Rainey, Katherine Rainey and Mason Bordwine about the smell and noticed Bordwine was holding a 2-year-old boy.
The boy's parents are Sharie and Bordwine, according to an incident report.
Harper-Head said Sharie told him she, Katherine, Bordwine and Owings had been smoking the marijuana.
"I asked where the marijuana was and [Katherine] left the living room and went into another room. She returned with a small cigarette that was burnt on the end…the cigarette smelled like marijuana," he said. "[Katherine] also placed a pack of rolling papers on a table that I picked up…she stated that the marijuana was hers and an old friend had given it to her."
Harper-Head said Katherine told him she had been sharing the marijuana with Owings, Bordwine and Sharie, but Jones had not been smoking.
After the four were arrested, the boy was placed in protective custody until the paternal grandparents arrived to take him.
Katherine and Sharie Rainey, Bordwine and Owings were all arrested for possession of a controlled dangerous substance and taken to the Grady County Jail.
