ALEX — Alex stampedes to district championship
There was nothing quiet or subtle about the way Alex girls announced their entrance into the regional winners bracket.
The Lady Longhorns were emphatic 62-24 winners over Macomb on Saturday. They sank 10 from beyond the arc on a night when it was harder to miss a shot.
"Tonight, the ball started falling, and it never stopped," head coach David Rosenberg said. "We wanted to take advantage of playing in our gym. so we wanted to take control early on. I felt if we could take control we'd have a good chance to win the game."
Alex was led by senior Ashley Williams with 17 points. She spent much of the season working inside the perimeter, but was noticeably more comfortable in her long-range shooting with two from beyond the arc.
Late shooting lifts Longhorns
The Alex boys came out on top in a shootout against Maud on Friday to win the district title 75-54.
It was an all out blitz to the bucket for the Longhorns, with four players scoring in double-digits. Shaedon Castor sank five threes in the second half to lead the way on 23 points.
But that all came after a fast start for Maud. They kept things interesting right up until about the fourth quarter, and it didn't sit well with the No. 17 Longhorns nor head coach Isaac Byrne.
Daniel Sweet in particular posed a persistent threat to Alex, with 16 points all from in and around the paint.
"The thing I take away is our defensive performance was pretty terrible," Byrne said. "At this point in the season, the most important thing is getting a win."
