Demons come back to take third

AMBER —

The Dibble boys' consistent shooting and a cold spell for Alex gave the Demons a 49-43 win in the third place final of the Grady County Tournament.

The top-seed Longhorns were undone by some stellar play down low and despite a halftime lead they fell to fourth in the final tournament standings. A steady stream of Dibble scoring saw Preston Sturgell lead the way with 13 points, while Logan Ruis and Wyatt Hayes finished with 10 points each.

Dibble dominated inside the paint early. They scored six straight inside, building up a five point lead midway through the first. The Longhorns went to their long-range game. Soon three from three-point land for Castor had the Longhorns up 9-8.

It was part of a 13-0 run that ended the first quarter and continued into the second. Close-range shots from Sumner and Hayes ended the run, but a last second three from Ryland Ketchum, his second for the game so far, gave Alex the 22-20 halftime lead.

The Longhorns went ice cold in the second half, while Dibble slowly built a lead. But it wasn’t one player doing all the Demons’ scoring. The most any single player scored in a quarter was four. A three from Sturgell kept Dibble with the overwhelming advantage early in the fourth quarter. The Longhorns were forced to chase the game, but Castor wasn’t hitting from long range like he had in the first quarter, nor was Kethcum. They both finished in double-digits, with Castor picking up a game-high 14 and Ketchum grabbing 11.

Ruiz hit eight of his 10 free-throws in the fourth quarter as the Longhorns were forced to foul to conserve clock.
