New bakery features edible works of art

— Something sweet is coming to Chickasha.

Brigette's Sweet Artistry, at 218 W. Pennsylvania Ave. will have its grand opening tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. Free samples–including chocolate chip scones–and desserts for sale will be among the attractions.

The new bakery will feature cakes, cupcakes, cookies, pies, truffles and more. Worlds away from standard sheet cakes, the cakes at Bridgette's Sweet Artistry are edible works of art.

Cake artist, Bridgette Ewing started her sweet craft early.

Ewing's mother, Lynette, taught Ewing how to bake when she was young girl and by the age of eight, she was baking cakes on her own. Ewing made her first wedding cake at the age of 12.

Cake has come a long way in recent years, Ewing said.

"Before it was all buttercream, now there's fondant," Ewing said.

Fondant is a type of icing that is commonly used on decorative cakes. Fondant's pliable texture allows cake artists to create highly detailed decorations.

Ewing said customers can bring a picture of what they want, often found by searching Google Images. Ewing can customize the idea or create a whole new cake from scratch.

In addition to having a forte for fondant, Ewing's renovations skills revamped the house that is now home to Bridgette's Sweet Artistry. With the help of her daughters–who also lend a hand in the kitchen–Ewing transformed the house.

With the same hands that turn flour into flowers, Ewing tore down the wood paneling and painted the refurbished walls in soft turquoise and a harlequin accent wall.

Ewing said she truly enjoys her work.

"My daughter told me, 'you're so lucky because you get to play with fondant all day and people buy it!'" Ewing said.

Bridgette's Sweet Artistry officially opens on Saturday, June 28. The bakery's hours are Tuesday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On June 27-28, the public is invited to refer a friend for a chance to win a free cake. By sending in a friend with your name and number and when they make a purchase, you are entered to wing a free cake up to a $40 value.
