On Feb. 4 a slew of new bills we will be brought before the state legislate. Among them is House Bill 1895, which essentially intends to reduce significant amounts of money to the Oklahoma Art Council in such a manner that the council would be eliminated in four years.
Why do we as a nation have this need to destroy the arts? I simply don't get it.
In history class we teach kids about the power of people like Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. Yet, when it comes to fostering creativity and artistic excellence in the youth of today we seem to fall short. I don't understand why this is happening we why our legislatures both locally and nationally think to key to solving any sort of budgetary issue is to cut from arts education. It's offensive.
The written word and arts are the only things that define us a society and the more we try to solve issues by depleting resources to this facet of our education the more we slowly destroy who we truly are.
