— Walking away from the fireworks stand with a big sack of ignitable fun is a summertime staple for some folks.

However, accidents due to fireworks are starting to become a tradition in themselves.

About 10 fires took place in and around the county between Thursday and Sunday. Most of these were firework related accidents, Dale Thompson, Grady County Emergency Management Director, said. In Bridgecreek, there were several grass fires on July 4 due to fireworks.

In some states, there is a push not to sell consumer fireworks, according to Paulette Nicholas, Grady County Emergency Management Deputy. Nicholas said she agrees with the ban of consumer fireworks.

Thompson added that he would also like to see a law passed to ban the sale of consumer fireworks due to the dangers involved to people and property as well as the cost of firefighting.

The Grady County Fire Department assisted with fires in Caddo County and Verden over the weekend.

This week, Grady County will be getting its first major heat wave of the summer, Nicholas said.

"We all know it won't be the last," she said.

Along with heat waves come fires, she added. Maintenance to county firetrucks are something that will need to be considered, she said.

There will be a fundraiser for the Pioneer Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, starting at 6 p.m., ending at 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 at Pioneer School on County Rd. 2790 and Highway 92. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served. All proceeds will go to the Pioneer Volunteer Fire Department.
