CHICKASHA —

The man suspected of robbing a Norman bank dressed as a woman was being held in the Grady County Jail yesterday after he was apprehended early yesterday morning in Norman by the FBI and Norman Police.

The Oklahoma City branch of the FBI said John Paul Matthews, 44, of Norman, is suspected of robbing the Republic Bank and Trust at gunpoint Oct. 7 at 1200 E. Lindsey Street in Norman.

Grady County Jail Administrator Shane Wyatt said the Grady County Jail has a federal contract with the U.S. Marshalls Western District to house federal prisoners awaiting extradition.

The FBI said the aledged bank robber walked into Arvest Bank, approached the teller and presented a note indicating he had a gun and demanded money. The report said he left the bank on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.

The FBI reported a witness seeing the cross-dressing bank robber get into a white Cadillac and recognized the man from surveillance video of a previous bank robbery at an Arvest Bank location in Norman Sept. 27.

He was expected to have an initial appearance in federal court Wednesday in Oklahoma City. The FBI said he would face federal bank robbery charges for both crimes.
