Chicks fight back to split Marlow games

CHICKASHA —

The Fightin' Chicks split their double-header against Marlow Monday night when many of the younger members of the Chickasha squad got a chance to show their ability to fight back from a losing position.

Chickasha went down by three runs in the first inning of game one and ended up losing 3-2, but they completed a 4-1 comeback win after once again falling behind in the opening frame in the second game.

"It's a chance for those players to gain experience, which is good," head coach Brad Gore said. "We try to get better every time we go out, and these guys are improving. It creates depth in the team."

Chickasha struggled to get their offense going in game one, although Gore said his team had opportunities to score but was not able to capitalize. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Chicks had Derek Sullivan and Brock Henderson in scoring position, but the Outlaws were able to get a strikeout to retire Chickasha with the score 3-1.

"We had several opportunities to score in that first game," Gore said. "In the fifth, sixth and seventh inning, we had a man on third and one out. We just weren't executing fundamental baseball."

All of that changed in the second game, when Chickasha produced a three-run response in the bottom of the first to take a lead they would never relinquish.

"I think it was just seeing different pitching," Gore said about the second game. "With these young kids, they need to learn the strike zone better and swing on strikes. I think they're getting better at that."

Young Chickasha pitchers also got their chance to shine Monday night. Henderson, who started the first game, went seven innings and kept Marlow at bay after the initially three-run first inning. The second game, it was Brandon Shumway's turn on the mound, and he didn't disappoint.
