Chicks run-rule Elgin Owls at home

CHICKASHA — The Chickasha High School baseball team beat Elgin at home in a quick run-rule game Monday.

The Fightin' Chicks beat the Owls 10-0, and improved to 2-0 this season.

Pitcher Blake Burns threw a shutout, taking care of the Owls in only 52 pitches over five innings.

"We got really good pitching the other night out of Lane [Smith] and Cade [Morris], and then today Burns," head coach Brad Gore said. "52 is excellent. He pounded the strike zone and had all his pitches working."

Chickasha took advantage of its speed, scoring all of its runs in the second and third innings, using bunts and aggressive baserunning to force Elgin into costly fielding errors.

"Against Lawton in the first game we hit some doubles and some home runs, and today, it just didn't seem like we were really on the ball hitting the long ones," head coach Brad Gore said. "So we started using the bunt. We can do both a little bit."

Chickasha's lineup includes mostly players with experience from last season, but there are some new faces on the roster who could earn more playing time as the season goes on.

Freshman Brooks Bush batted ninth against Elgin and had two RBIs.

Chickasha's next game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. tonight at Weatherford High School.

The Chicks will return home for a 5 p.m. March 8 against Del City.
