Chickasha baseball senior night spoiled by MacArthur

CHICKASHA — After getting blown out 12-0 Monday in Lawton, the MacArthur Highlanders spoiled Chickasha High School's senior night by upsetting the Fightin' Chicks at Elliott Field on Thursday.

Chickasha lost the game 6-5, despite only giving up three hits. The Chicks dropped to 26-6 this season with one game left, a non-district matchup at Southmoore at 6 p.m. tonight.

Errors and baserunning mistakes cost Chickasha in the game, which they led 4-0 after the first inning.

"We had a little bit of a different routine today, and I think some guys just lost focus of what their jobs were," head coach Brad Gore said.

The Chicks had three errors, and twice had baserunners caught in rundowns between second and third base.

Chickasha pitchers also were not on their game, walking seven batters and hitting three more.

"It just comes down to throwing the ball over the plate," Gore said. "We just walked too many people. They only hit one ball hard the whole game."

Blake Burns started the game, and pitched 5.2 innings. He retired the first six batters he faced, before walking three in the third inning, one in the fourth and one in the fifth.

MacArthur scored three runs in that third inning, and one more in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.

Brandon Shumway relieved Burns in the sixth inning, and pitched 0.2 innings before Hayden Johnson finished the game.

Chickasha still had a chance to win in the bottom of the seventh.

Blake Burns singled to start the inning, and advanced to second when MacArthur threw the ball out of play.

Derek Sullivan moved Burns to third on a sacrifice bunt, putting the tying run in scoring position with one out.

Ryker Steelman came up to bat in place of Brooks Bush, and attempted a bunt to get Burns home, but it went right to the pitcher and Burns was thrown out at home. Tresjon Davis flew out to the right fielder to end the game.

Despite the loss, Chickasha will still host its regional tournament next week, with the other teams in the bracket yet to be determined.
