Safe room project meeting explains requirements

A public meeting about the new safe room project was held in the Canadian Valley Technology Center on July 11 in Room B.

Grady County Emergency Management recently received notice from the the Grady County Home Finance Authority of a county wide safe room program.

The program may have enough funds for as many as 25 storm shelters. However, if more applications come in by the due date, Aug. 15, more safe rooms could be considered for rebate.

Residents must have a contract with a vendor within 60 days of the date posted on these guidelines. The vendor must build and/or install the safe room that meets or exceeds FEMA 320/361 standards. Residents are responsible for researching vendors and checking their references. While the Grady County Emergency Management cannot reference vendors, they do recommend that residents try find a vendor that is a current producer member of the National Storm Shelter Association and in good standing. Dale Thompson, Grady County Emergency Management Director, went over the guidelines:

    •    Applicants must be the primary resident of the household to receive a safe room.

    •    Install a safe room within 100 feet of your home.

    •    Storm shelter must be on the property cited on the application.

    •    Own the property cited on the application.

    •    The safe room must be installed after the award letter is received.

    •    The property listed on the application must not be located in a Special Flood Hazard Area determined by FEMA.

    •    Safe rooms must be installed within six months.

Once the shelter is installed, residents are required to bring the following documents to the Grady County Emergency Management Office and schedule a time for inspection. Call before stopping by: 405.222.2339. Inspections will be done on Fridays only.

    •    All original storm shelter receipts showing your shelter is paid in full.

    •    City building permits (if required).

    •    Signed and notarized affidavit (certificates of installation) showing the shelter meets and/or exceeds FEMA 320/361 guidelines.

    •    Two pictures: one of the installed safe room, one of the front of the house

    •    Copy of the cancelled check (front and back) or credit card receipt proving the safe room is paid in full and the amount paid.

Upon receipt of all documents and once inspection is complete, payment will be processed. Recipients of the rebate will be required to come to the Grady County Clerk's Office in the courthouse. Residents must bring two forms of ID.

Applicants will receive a letter saying whether or not they were approved.
