Centenarians thriving in Chickasha community

CHICKASHA —

The Coalition of Advocates for Responsible Eldercare (CARE) salutes Chickasha, Oklahoma, for their great number of centenarians, according to Keith Dobbs, President and CEO of CARE.

While visiting the four long-term and rehabilitation care facilities in Chickasha this week, Dobbs discovered almost every facility had at least one resident who is near or has passed the 100-year mark.

“They must have something in the water to have so many centenarians in Chickasha,” commented Dobbs.

“Plus, I witnessed a lot of love and great care being provided to these noble seniors at the facilities where they live,” continued Dobbs.

Touring over 250 long term care facilities across Oklahoma this past year, Dobbs has interviewed and photographed a great number of colorful residents and centenarians.  CARE is a non-profit organization established in 2004 for advocacy on behalf of the long-term care profession.  Charged with a mission to advance the quality of long-term health care in Oklahoma, CARE achieves this by sharing the passion and joy of those in the profession through education, connectivity, advocacy, and recognition.

“These reveled citizens were born and lived before cars, televisions, and certainly before microwaves, computers, cell phones, and iPad,” shared Dobbs.

On his tour of Chickasha, Dobbs visited Glenhaven Retirement Village, Shanoan Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation, Grace Living Center-Chickasha, and Chickasha Nursing Center.

Complete with braided pigtails and a great smile, Adgest Richard turned 103 this past June 7.  A resident of Grace Living Center in Chickasha, Richard said, “I don’t know where they got that name.  I’ve never heard it before.”

Richard spends much of her day bringing joy to her caregivers at Grace Living Center.  “She’s just always happy and has a kind word for all of us who have the honor of caring for her,” stated Linda Herrin, administrator at Grace Living Center.
