Options Counseling Service, at 205 W. Chickasha Ave., Suite 1, in Chickasha is offering five new therapy groups, according to Pam Foster, who has owned Options since 2007.
"We just saw there was a need in the community, even from other professions in the community," Foster said. Those who needed these services had to travel outside of Chickasha.
"Group therapies really work," Foster said, "It's helpful for people to listen to others talk and not feel like they're the only person in the world with a problem."
The anger management groups will take place on Mondays.
There are two anger management classes, one for adults from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and one for children from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The adult class is for anyone who thinks they may have a hard time controlling their temper. The children's class is for children who may have exhibited anger-related behavior problems such as bullying or having tantrums.
The parenting class will take place on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The parenting classes may be helpful for new parents who have children with challenging behaviors and/or parents of blended families.
A group therapy for bullied children and teenagers takes place on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Bullying has a negative effect on a young person's self-esteem, Foster said. Strategies for dealing with bullies and raising self-esteem are addressed.
The therapy group for domestic violence will take place on Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m.
Those with anger problems that affect relationships at home, who may or may not have legal problems, may find this group helpful, Foster said.
On Fridays, from 6 to 7 p.m., there is a relationship building class for adults who want to learn how to relate to each other better.
Options still offers the grief recovery group the first Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. and the substance abuse group every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
The grief recovery group is for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. Foster said this group is not only for recent losses. The substance abuse group offers education about what alcohol and other drugs affect the minds and bodies of users.
There are four counselors at Options. Foster is a licensed professional counselor and licensed alcohol and drug counselor. Rex Fryer is a licensed professional counselor. Melanie McKinley is a licensed masters social worker. Janis Rury is a behavioral health rehabilitation specialist.
