Parkinson touts local talent for new CHS boys coach decision

Outgoing boys' soccer coach Scott Parkinson said Chickasha Public Schools would do well to look within their current system for his replacement ahead of next spring.

Parkinson's departure to Oklahoma Wesleyan University to become an assistant coach leaves Athletic Director Yohance Brown with two head coaching positions to fill ahead of the next academic year. Christy Edelen is leaving her position as head coach of girls basketball to join her husband and teach at Apache next fall.

After Chickasha's final game of the season against Elgin on Friday, Parkinson suggested there were local individuals and people within the Chickasha schools system who he feels would be a perfect fit for the job.

"There's been some amazing assistants here," Parkinson said. "[Brian] Byars has been with me for two years, Phil Pryor is at the middle school. Both know the kids, the facilities, the staff, so they, to me, seem like people the school ought to speak to."

Byars will be a senior next season at USAO as a goalkeeper, while Pryor just completed his senior season last year.

Brown said he doesn't start any searches to fill a position until after a coach has submitted a resignation letter and the school board has a chance to view and rule on it. As such, the search for the boys soccer job has not begun in an official capacity.

Brown agrees that local soccer outlets such as USAO and Chickasha Youth Soccer Association provide a big help for the high school. He said he would like to to continue this cooperation.

"It's been such a great resource," he said. "Scott Parkinson was part of USAO and Phil Pryor at the middle school was also. I hope to continue to use them."

The search for a new girls basketball coach is not only underway, but in the second round of interviews, Brown said. He hopes to have a recommendation to the school board by their May 12 regular meeting.
