Man shot twice in gunfight with police

CHICKASHA —

An 18-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly shot at two police officers following a brief chase early Tuesday morning.

Decayla Maul was shot in the chin in the ankle before Grady County Deputies and members of the Chickasha Police Department placed him under arrest.

Major Elip Moore, assistant chief of the Chickasha Police Department said around 1:30 a.m.

officers were involved in a high speed pursuit that started near 9th Street and Kansas Avenue. It ended in the 1700 block of S. 7th Street after the driver lost control of his vehicle and stopped in a yard.

Maul, exited the car and fled on foot, according to a CPD report. Deputies and officers chased the subject to the area of 8th Street and Nevada Avenue where Maul brandished a revolver style hand gun and opened fire on the officers.

Deputies Cory Loftice and Josh Dwaileebe returned fire, striking the subject. Maul was taken into custody following the shooting and transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he received treatment for gun shot wounds.

"Sheriff (Jim) Weir and I agree that our initial review of this situation leads us to believe our officers' and deputies' actions were legal, justified and necessary," Moore said."The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation was contacted and will be conducting the shooting investigation. This is standard practice when you have officer involved shootings".

Maul was treated, released and booked into the Grady county jail on numerous charges including three counts of shooting with intent to kill, no state drivers license, eluding and possession of marijuana.

There was a 16 year old juvenile male that had been the front seat passenger of the car that was questioned and released to a guardian at the scene with no charges pending.
