Summer ends for Chicks after elimination

CHICKASHA —

The summer season ended perhaps a little earlier than Chickasha would have wanted when they lost to Binger 13-5 and were eliminated from their own tournament Wednesday evening.

The Bobcats put Chickasha in a deep hole right off the bat with five runs on five hits past starting pitcher Brock Henderson. They picked up two more in the second inning for a gaping 7-0 lead as the game began to get out of hand.

Matters were made worse by the Fightin’ Chicks failing to respond with their bats in the first two innings. The third frame was a different story. Jonathan Gushing was the first to get Chickasha on the board, crossing home off a hit by Brock Henderson. Later, Mario Medina crossed home plate on a wild pitch to make the score 7-2.

With Henderson and Orion Couch on base, Ty Thompson's 2RBI-single made the deficit just three. Brandon Shumway crossed home before the inning was out to make the score 7-5 in the third to give the Chicks a fighting chance.

After an uncharacteristically shaky start by Henderson on the mound, Levi Kel stepped on to give Binger a different look in the third inning. It resulted in a three up, three down, but Chickasha did not immediately take advantage of the opportunity. Their third inning burst proved to be only a flash in the pan, as Binger came back to make them pay.

Five runs in off of five more hits in the fourth inning made the score 12-5 Bobcats and brought another Chicks pitching change with Kel exiting for Couch. Binger's Brayden Estraca, a senior in the fall, was the outstanding player on the day, as he went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs and four RBI.

In what proved to be the final inning, Binger scored one more in the fifth to put the game beyond reach.
