Thompson preliminary trial set for end of July

— The man accused of murdering a Norman woman with a close range shotgun wound was arraigned yesterday.

Steven Ray Thompson is accused of killing Sara Maisano last month in his Amber home.

The arraignment was held in Honorable Judge Timothy A. Brauer’s courtroom at 1:30 p.m.

In addition to first-degree murder, Thompson is charged with the assault of Katie Garner. He is represented by Oklahoma Defense Attorney Irven Box.

Brauer confirmed Thompson understood his rights and then outlined future legal processes.

Brauer advised Thompson of two upcoming court dates: A counsel of attorney court date on at 9 a.m. on July 26, and a preliminary hearing conference court date at 1:30 p.m. on July 31.

District Attorney Jason Hicks request to deny bond was granted by Brauer.

“His attorney and I had a discussion prior to the hearing and we, in essence, knew there wasn’t going to be a bond set so to put on evidence and take a bunch of the court’s time wasn’t necessary,” Hicks said. “It was a very brutal crime, there were two victims. One is dead and the other was very seriously injured.”

According to Hicks, the case is still under investigation and for this reason he is reluctant to release further details or plans of prosecution.

Garner is listed as an endorsed witness for the state of Oklahoma, but was not present at the arraignment.

Hicks declined to comment on her condition, advising his comments could potentially interfere with the direction of the case.
