Organization grants Christmas wishes to foster kids

Not everyone gets to go home for Christmas.

Oklahoma Foster Care Christmas Wishes is a program that seeks to make the wishes of foster children come true.

About 150 foster children in Grady County will be writing down what they want for Christmas. These wish lists are available for a variety of entities to fulfill.

Businesses, churches, individuals, nonprofit organizations in the Grady County community  can help make a difference in the lives of children who may not see their families this year or receive any Christmas presents, Amy Witt, Grady County DHS, said.

The monetary value of each wish list is about $50 to $75 per child. The lists are of specific toys, clothing and other items that the child has requested. Their clothing size will be provided on the list.

Witt asked that the gifts not be wrapped.

The wish lists will be sent to those who volunteer in mid-October, but it's not too early to start signing up.

Witt, a University of Science and Arts Oklahoma Senior, is coordinating the project this year. She said that the annual event has been successful in years past. One year there was a business that took 33 wish lists, she said.

The community can help in other ways as well. Donations in the form of wrapping supplies are welcome.

Other contributions can be made for the Christmas skate party that will take place for the foster children in December. Donations are needed to buy goodie bags and refreshments.

To sign up for a wish list or make another contribution, call Witt at 405.574.7472. Arrangements to have the gifts picked up can be made.
