Today the president spoke on gun control in our nation and I've decided to take a moment and give my humble opinion on his plan and its four components.
1. Closing background check loopholes to keep guns out of dangerous hands.
I feel like this is a no brainer. Closing the loopholes that allow for instant gun ownership is something that should have been done a long time ago. I find no fault with this idea and welcome the change.
2. Banning military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and taking other common-sense steps to reduce gun violence.
I agree with half of this. I concur that, military-style assault weapons have no place on our streets. There is no purpose for a weapon of that sort to be privately owned anymore. The Second Amendment, defend ourselves from a tyrannical government argument is no longer valid, so I support the president in this regard.
However, I am not too keen on limiting magazine size to a 10 bullet max. Multiple hand guns utilize clips that hold well over 10 bullets and I don't see how limiting the amount each magazine can carry will do much to stop a criminal from quickly changing between clips.
I see more potential in a law abiding citizen failing to change magazines fast enough if attacked.
3. Making schools safer.
Essentially add resource officers and invest in school security. Yeah, who wouldn't support this?
4. Improving mental health services.
I can't begin to stress the importance of this issue. I believe this is the key problem and the crux of the majority of our school violence. Address this and stop the death of thousands. We are just now receiving reports that a Blanchard High School student committed suicide on Monday night. One can only wonder that if proper mental health resources were available to the student, that he may still be alive. Suicide is just as large of a danger to our young people as mass homicide.
