On April 27, at the Oasis Art Studios and Gallery, Virginia Savage will be leading an experiential workshop which will encourage participants to explore self-expression through various art mediums in her workshop, "Clearing a space for growth."
Savage, a metal health therapist trained in art therapy, has developed this workshop designed to "help participants transform unhealthy mental habits" that hold them back in their personal and professional lives.
Art therapy allows people to approach their problems from a different angle, Savage said.
Techniques, such as creative visualization, will be used. Creative visualization involves thinking of specific topics and visualization in order to guide one's life in the desired direction.
Some of the art mediums participants will use include three dimensional figures and drawing. The workshop is art novice friendly. Creating a masterpiece is not the primary intent.
"The results are not meant to be a museum piece," Savage said. Self-reflection and expressing oneself creatively is the goal, she said.
"Participants will leave with a renewed sense of their own unique creative power," Savage said.
Savage said she has wanted to do a workshop like this for a long time and is looking forward to developing this project. In the future, she said she would like to provide art therapy opportunities for caregivers who often have difficulty making time for themselves. Artistic expression can be a helpful release
Savage has applied for three hours of continuing education units, for licensed professional counselors and licensed family and marriage therapists, and is awaiting confirmation.
"Clearing a space for growth" is open to anyone, Savage said, but space is limited. Reservations must be received by April 22. Contact Savage at 405-514-9169 or firstname.lastname@example.org or PO Box 2062, Chickasha, OK, 73023-2062. The workshop is $35, which includes materials to be used.
The workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on April 27 at the Oasis Studios and Gallery at 327 N. 6th Street in Chickasha.
