Large hail, high winds and possible tornadoes could be the forecast early this week, Dale Thompson, Grady County Emergency Management Director, reported to the Grady County Commissioners at their regular meeting on April 8.

The outdoor sirens in Ninnekah are in need of repair, Thompson said. Thompson will be meeting with the Red Rock Behavior Clinic to discuss the storm season as well as the importance of weather radios. Many citizens have reported that they cannot hear the outdoor sirens, Thompson said, which underlines the need for weather radios.

"Weather radios are the best warning," he said.

Thompson discussed the recent flood plain meeting, which included flooding insurance for Grady County. Commissioner Windle Hardy and Thompson discussed wether or not national flood insurance would soon be comparable to private insurance due to the possibility of rates increasing each year.

In addition, the FEMA maps had changed over the years. For example, the maps from the early 1990s placed First National Bank on Chickasha Ave. in a flood plain, but in 2012, it is not. Some Grady County residents may find themselves on the edge of a flood plain.

George Manning, E911 Coordinator gave the Safety Report. Manning is continuing to audit all platted sub-divisions. He will soon inspect all three towers with Major Walker. The SDR/Horizon program will be online this week, Manning said. He will be training law enforcement officers to use it. There were 1,733 911 calls in March, Manning reported.

Betsy White, from the McClain-Garvin County Youth and Family Center told the county commissioners about the Healthy Beginnings program, which is being extended to Grady County. The number of child abuse and child death is high for the county, White said.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, which is symbolized by a blue ribbon. Blue ribbons will be hung on the Grady County Courthouse.
