Young Chicks shine, defeat Duncan

CHICKASHA —

After the long trip north, Duncan softball came away from Chickasha empty handed after the Lady Chicks triumphed in both summer league games.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning and getting pegged back by Duncan in the second, the Lady Chicks stormed on to a 4-2 win in the first game Tuesday night behind the pitching of incoming freshman Keely Cauthan. In the second game, Chickasha came out on top 8-4. Despite getting the runs they need, head coach Dennis Furr believes his side can achieve even higher marks and hopes to get more out of them in the games to come.

"Against that caliber of pitcher, we should have hit the ball better," Furr said. "It was good enough. I thought we could have done better. When you play at a level you don't think is your best and still win, it's a good thing; but, it can also be a little concerning. We've got a few things we'll work on."

It was a night for up-and-comers as Chickasha tinkered with their line-up between games as each player continues to get action in real-time game scenarios. Some of the more familiar names took charge in the first game to come out with the two-run win. Tawn Neidy scored two runs while going 2-2 at the plate, including a triple in the first inning to give Chickasha its first lead of the night.

Neidy scored the extra run in the third inning to give Chickasha the 4-2 lead after Shorty Clift got a lead-off double, stole third and came across home plate off a wild throw.

Despite not pitching, usual starter Kelsi Gore contributed from the plate as she also went 2-2, scored a run and earned an RBI.
