Council looks at banning smoking on city property

CHICKASHA —

The Chickasha City Council looked at possible smoking regulations on city property this week.

"We are considering making all city properties smoke free," Mayor Hank Ross said. "We hope to construct an ordinance and bring this up for vote in March."

The legislation would include parks such as Shannon Springs.

City Manager Stewart Fairburn said no ordinance has been written, but electronic cigarettes will not be included in any future action.

"The Oklahoma state statute is at minimum a sign most be posted at the property (telling people it's smoke free) and if someone is smoking, we must ask them to comply with the ordinance," said Fairburn. "There was some discussion about putting some bite in there too, like possibly likening the action to littering, but we don't know where we are going with it at this state."

The council also looked at a possible loan that would allow construction on the first phase of the water treatment plant to begin.

Ross said a $10 million loan with 2.5 percent interest would give the city the ability to start construction without costing too much money.

"We would complete phase 1 now instead of waiting for the CIP tax to get it done," Ross said.

The city finished paying off the sports complex this week and Ross said this plan will allow the city to spend a $1 million a year on street repair, and allocate more money for wastewater work.

The council will meet Monday for their regular meeting.
