Minco's Overton signs with Bisons

Despite an injury to his right knee in the final game of his senior season, Jacob Overton will go on to play football in college.

The Minco running back and All-State selection signed for Oklahoma Baptist University in front of a full room of friends and family at the high school auditorium. Overton is still in rehabilitation after rupturing his ACL and MCL in his knee in a playoff game last year, but the Bison coaches were still convinced he was a player they wanted.

"I didn't know when I was going to be able to come back," Overton said. "I was afraid everybody was going to lose interest in me because I got hurt. But, they said they still wanted me to be apart of the program, and that gave me a lot of peace."

The Bulldogs have used Overton in a number of positions throughout his four years as a varsity starter, specifically running back, wide receiver, and some time at quarterback. He comes from a big Oklahoma State family and was hoping to become a Cowboy after high school.

But Overton said he spent much time in prayer, and OBU seems to be the right path.

"I've been to church camp there five summers in a row, so I'm very familiar with the campus," he said. "I prayed about it for a couple of months, and I felt like God was leading me to OBU rather than OSU. It made the idea of playing football there much more exciting."

OBU is currently in the process of moving up to Division II, said offensive line coach C. W. Cooke who attended Overton's letter of intent signing. It's a big step so soon after the program was rebooted just last year for the first time since the 1940s. Should things pan out as expected, Overton would be playing at that level of competition, and he said that was an attractive possibility.
