June brings heavy rain to Grady County

— June is living up to its reputation of Oklahoma's wettest month.

Beneficial rainfall reached all across Grady County over the weekend. Minco received 6.08 inches, Chickasha received 5.22 inches, Ninnekah received 4.29 inches and Acme received 7.34 inches, Dale Thompson, Grady County Emergency Management Director said.

The rain also reached the drier southwest portion of the state including Altus, which got six to seven inches.

The Community Emergency Response Team made their debut at Relay for Life on June 6. Seven members attended the relay on the University of Science and Art Oklahoma campus grounds. CERT manned a booth and monitored the weather. The relay shut down a few minutes early due to incoming thunderstorms.

On the fire department side, a few control burns got out of control. There was also an increase in medical calls due to rain.

No action was taken on the burn ban this week, but it will be up for discussion next week at the Grady County Commissioners meeting.

The 911 charges for landline phones could be facing an increase.

The Grady County Commissioners approved a request for the district attorney to research the possibility of increasing the 911 percentage on landlines from 10 to 15 percent and write the ballot language to put on the November ballot.

The board agreed to fund the Grady County Sheriff's office personnel for June's payroll, which was short $2,000 this month.

Grady County Sheriff Jim Weir said the sheriff's office has already cut two employees back to part time and "can't shave it back anymore."

Cell phones pay a $0.50 flat rate. A one or two dollar increase would alleviate the problem, Jack Porter, Grady County Commissioner, said.

Increasing the landline rate could make callers use their landline even less, Windle Hardy, Grady County Commissioner said.
