Glaze addresses rumors of possible ISR elimination

CHICKASHA — Jo Perryman, Chickasha Public Schools educator, addressed the Chickasha Board of Education about in school retention at the regular school board meeting on Monday.

Perryman said she spoke to Chickasha Public Schools Superintendent Jim Glaze about rumors that ISR would be cut as a cost saving measure. Glaze told her the issue was being seriously considered, Perryman said.

Perryman said she was speaking before the board in an effort to have them reconsider cutting ISR. She said that in her 12 years of experience as a teacher, she has never had a student who was suspended bring back any of the school work that was sent home with them, completed or otherwise.

ISR, she said, at least ensures that some of the work gets done, possibly saving the student from falling further behind.

Perryman gave the example of a student she had who was sent to ISR for three weeks, just before the end of instruction test. Perryman said that had the student been sent home, he may not have passed the EOI.

"At least I know he was doing some work," Perryman said.

She asked the board to consider other options, such as having a monitor for ISR who did not require a teacher's salary.

Chickasha Public Schools is anticipating a cut in state aid in fall 2013, Dwight Yokum, Chickasha Public Schools Financial Director, said. The school district is anticipating the cut in the budget to be on the safe side, Yokum said. He reported that the current carryover is $843,000.
