If you're from Oklahoma you've probably heard of the Chickasha Festival of Light. Celebrating its 20th year of operation, the festival is a free community event that showcases thousands of light displays.
What most may not know however, is the work that goes into making the festival a success. According to Festival of Light board secretary Monica Trevino, this year has surpassed previous years.
"It has been an amazing year," Trevino said. "We have seen record number days. That could be due to our 20th anniversary or the beautiful weather we are having."
Some may argue, Trevino said, these are the largest numbers the city has ever seen at the festival.
Preparation for the festival happens on many levels. From committee members, to the installation process, every volunteer helps Trevino explained.
"Volunteers are critical," Trevino explained.
Currently there are three main volunteer positions available at the festival which include the front gate greeters, the thank you gate and the gift shop. The front gate is crucial, Trevino said. People may wait in line for two hours and it's important that when they finally get to the gate they are greeted with a happy, smiling face. The thank you gate takes donations and hands out whatever candy the festival is giving away that night, typically it is something like candy canes or peppermints. The gift shop, Trevino explained, is responsible for answering any questions about the festival, any lost or found items and sometimes a safe place for any children that may have wondered away from their parents.
