Shoplifter nabbed at Walmart while police are responding to car accident

CHICKASHA —

On Sept. 12, a man was charged with shoplifting and public intoxication.

While investigating an accident without injury, a Chickasha Police Officer witnessed a Walmart employee attempting to stop a subject attempting to leave the business at the south main exit on the west side of the building, according to the report.

The subject later identified himself as Joseph Thrash. The Walmart employee said Thrash had attempted to shoplift some items. Thrash produced a receipt dated Sept. 7, 2013. The items on the receipt did not show any of the items in Thrash's cart, the affidavit said.

When the officer asked Thrash if he had purchased the items in the cart, Thrash said that he had done so. Thrash said he did not know which ash register he had used to purchase the items.

The officer reported that while he was interviewing Thrash, he detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from Thrash's breath and person. The officer noted that Thrash's eyes were glassy and his speech was slurred. Thrash admitted that he had consumed alcoholic beverages, the affidavit said.

The officer placed Thrash under arrest for public intoxication and Thrash was transported to the Grady County Jail.

The officer who arrested Thompson completed his initial accident investigation and then made contact with Walmart Asset Protection, the report said.

Video footage confirmed that Thrash had selected bananas, New York Strip steak, sirloin steak, a thirty pack of Bud Light beer and a multipack of Doritos. The total for these items was $45.54, according to the affidavit.
